In the summer of 2006, a group of volunteers serving different organizations in Northern Uganda came together after witnessing a tragedy in motion. Behind the rusted gates of a regional referral hospital, the volunteers visited with patients, both young and old. Each had a story and a dream. The patients had been forced to receive inadequate treatment at this distressed hospital because their lives had been heavily impacted by a war that has plagued Northern Uganda for over the past 20 years. As a result, their impoverished status had forced them to accept inadequate healthcare as the only healthcare.
Behind the patients, the group explored the deprived wards and befriended the hospital’s staff and administration. The struggle of the patients was mirrored in the voices of the staff. The hospital was understaffed, underfunded, undersupplied, and overpopulated. Even the most fundamental medical equipment remained absent within any of the hospital's ward and was costing innocent lives.
The volunteers departed the hospital overwhelmed by the tragedy they had just observed and the silence that surrounded it. That day, the tragedy of the poor inspired dreams of change for both free healthcare in Northern Uganda and for the lives of the people who must depend on it to survive.
This is our response and these are our dreams of change.
Restoring Northern Uganda's Healthcare
Restoring Northern Uganda’s Healthcare (ReNUH) is a a non-profit organization dedicated to improving healthcare and introducing technological solutions in the developing world.
The mission of ReNUH is to rehabilitate and improve the operation of health facilities in order to contribute to the well-being of the people of Northern Uganda. We are doing this by assisting in the procurement of fundamental medical equipment and in the implementation of critical renovation in order to allow Northern Uganda's health facilities to adequately treat their patients. It is also our goal to provide much needed medical supplies and health education to healthcare facilities that offer services free of charge.
By increasing the standards of health facilities in Northern Uganda, we are investing in the lives of patients, from children to adults, and in the future of the Republic of Uganda.
