ReNUH seeks to meet the health needs of Northern Uganda through innovation and creativity. One of the things we recognize is how health and economic status are intricately linked. The war has left women and children in a particularly vulnerable state of health with extremely limited economic opportunities. Respond ReNUH, the Ugandan side of operations, is currently running three programs to help address both health and economic needs.
IGAP – Income Generating Activity Project
This program works with vulnerable women who were all previously abducted and forced into motherhood while in the bush with the rebel group, the LRA. 26 women are now trained in handicrafts and finance management. Each woman was also tested for HIV and if positive, now on ARV treatment. This eight month project is sponsored by the African Hungarian Union (AHU). At the end of the eight month period these women will be able to use their training and savings to invest in a money making venture of their own. To purchase an authentic and unique beaded necklace by the women in this program please visit our online store.
AChP – Adopt a child Program
This program is specifically to pay the schools fees for the children of the women working in the IGAP project. The majority of these children were born in captivity and face the stigmas associated with being children of the LRA. They are not recognized as belonging to any particular clan unless the mother was accepted back by her family. None of these children have attended school in the past. Attending and completing school decreases health and poverty related risk factors. By adopting a child through AChP for $25.00/ month, you will pay for school fees, uniforms, school lunch and snacks, extracurricular activities, and transport. Sponsors pay 3 month blocks a total of $75.00 USD.
Self Help Groups
The Self Help Groups target the vulnerable groups of women and men in the rural areas, particularly people living with AIDS. These groups are nearly free to implement. Each group receives counseling on finance and savings. The groups will develop a democratic system and elect a group leader. Each meeting the group will decide on an amount to contribute to the pot. Out of their own pockets the group will begin a bank. Once the amount is high enough the money can be loaned to individuals to borrow for personal business interests or invested by the group into other income generating actives and business.
