Since our presence in Northern Uganda, ReNUH has envisioned bringing aid to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital. While conducting further assessments, the hospital administration requested our help with renovations of the surgical department.

In February 2008 ReNUH volunteers organized renovations of the surgical ward, the sole building where patients await and recover from surgery. In addiction to the serious lack of staff, the conditions of the ward along with most of the hospital are horrific. There is no way to completely secure the doors and some are literally falling off the hinges. The beds are old and ratted with no protective coverings to keep patients body fluids from seeping through. There is no mosquito netting for the beds or screening for the dilapidated windows.

ReNUH organized with only a small budget to assess the need, hire contractors, buy materials and carry out as much work as we could. Unfortunately, the expenses outweighed our financial capacity and we were unable to aid with all of the surgical ward’s needs. We prioritized and decided to focus on the electrical and plumbing renovations.

ReNUH was able to provide the operating theatre with a new ground to stabilize the electricity as well as ensure the surgical with a newly wired electrical system and new light fixtures providing electricity for machines as well as light in every room. We were able to fix the few plumbing needs, as well as stock maintenance equipment for the future upkeep.

We also had water filters donated from “Wine to Water” www.winetowater.org [1] ReNUH provided the Surgical Ward with a water filter for both the men’s and the women wings as well as set up two filters for within the maternity ward for new and expecting mothers to have safe drinking water.

Upon completion of the renovations of the hospital, we organized a local “Community Clean Up Day” where local community members volunteered their time with ReNUH removing the rubble and debris from the hospital grounds and clearing out the drainage areas.
